Most elder abuse by family of victim, says report

Elder abuse 2Up to 6 per cent of elderly Victorians are being abused, most often by a son or daughter, and often motivated by a sense of entitlement to the victim’s money.

A report released today reveals the scale of the growing problem. An analysis of 755 older people who called the Seniors Rights Victoria helpline showed that the majority of victims suffered from financial abuse (37 per cent), followed by emotional (35.8 per cent). Elderly women were the most likely to be victims.

Victims were also subjected to physical (9.9 per cent), sexual (0.3 per cent) and social abuse (5.2 per cent). Many also suffered from neglect and were not being provided with basic necessities such as food and utilities.

Ninety per cent of the abusers were the victim’s adult child, many of whom suffered from drug, alcohol or gambling addictions, or mental health problems.   Read more

    I wrote my senior thesis on elder abuse and am continuing educating myself about it — glad to see that more people are writing about this issue and raising awareness.
